Think twice before you crack out the melons this Summer, as they’ve already killed 16 people and injured 56 across America, reports the Examiner.com.

The fruit contaminated with Listeria have been withdrawn from sale in many states, however the bacteria can incubate in your system for months before the symptoms begin to show, meaning people chowing down on melons lately may be carriers of the disease.

The list of states reporting outbreaks include California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
