Monk Sets Himself on Fire

Posted on October 5, 2011

Another tragic case of a Tibetan monk lighting himself on fire in the disputed region has emerged, reports Time.

Kelsang Wangchuck is allegedly the fifth teenage monk to undertake self immolation this year, as they fight for religious and cultural freedom from the strict Chinese rule that dominates the Tibetan region.

While he burned, onlookers said he held aloft a picture of the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader exiled from the country.

To quote a Time interview with a senior Tibetan leader, “Monks take a vow that says they are not allowed to end their lives. But on the other hand, these actions are not for an individual, they are for a people.”
