Search Engine Poisoning

Posted on October 5, 2011

As net users become more savvy with their internet security and susceptibility to online scams and hackers, a new threat is emerging, and you might have just fallen for it.

Search engine poisoning is where scammers hack into a website and essentially split it into three by modifying what it will look like depending on who the user is, reports the Brisbane Times.

The website generally looks fine to those who arrive directly, however users who click through to the site via a search engine are redirected to an entirely different website that might either scam them or expose their computer to a virus.

Earlier this year, the scam netted a Latvian e-gang $72m.
