Tall People Make Better Politicians

Posted on October 19, 2011

According to a  study from Dr Gregg Murray at Texas Tech University, our faith in tall leaders is an evolutionary throwback to a time when conflicts were resolved by violence.

The Guardian reckons voters see tall politicians as better suited for leadership, according to a survey of how people visualise their leaders. Psychologists believe the bias may stem from an evolved preference for physically imposing chiefs who could dominate enemies.

The study was prompted by Dr Murray’s fascination with the “presidential height index” – a previous finding that the taller of the Republican and Democrat candidates emerged victorious in 58 per cent of US presidential elections between 1789 and 2008.

How many people see Julia Gillard as an imposing tribal chief figure? Yeah, us neither.
